• Red Hot Chili Peppers – Off The Map

The continued survival and huge commercial success of the Red Hot Chili Peppers may come as a surprise to some, but Off the Map finds them in fine form. Recorded live on the last night of their all-conquering Californication world tour, the set veers from the Funkadelic-influenced rock that made their name to the more mature, thoughtful side that has always underpinned their work. Thus “Suck My Kiss,” “Blood Sugar Sex Magik,” “Right on Time,” and “Me and My Friends” are all franticly funky, but the band is far more effective on the elegant sweep of “Californication,” “Scar Tissue,” and the classic “Under the Bridge.” Despite their advancing years, the Chilis still ensure a high level of performance–the visuals are a mass of swirling limbs and instruments, while the crystal-clear sound is dominated by Flea’s pulsating bass.

• Queens Of The Stone Age – 3voor12 Acoustic Session, July 3rd, 2007

Enkele uren voor het concert in Paradiso speelde Queens Of The Stone Age een exclusieve, intieme, akoestische sessie van zes nummers, speciaal voor 3VOOR12, naar aanleiding van hun nieuwe album Era Vulgaris. De Desmet Studio’s in Amsterdam waren het decor voor die sessie, de elfde speciale ‘3VOOR12 Presenteert’ showcase.

Gewapend met een wandelstok en een goede dronk hield frontman Josh Homme van Queens of the Stone Age samen met de gehele band ongeveer een half uur het publiek in zijn greep. Met drie akoestische gitaren, wat percussie en toetsen kwamen zes nummers in een uitgekleed jasje voorbij. Er werd losjes geïmproviseerd en er was tijd voor grapjes en gekeuvel met het publiek.

• Kings Of Leon – Reading Festival, Berkshire, UK, 2007

On this year’s Because of The Times, the brothers Followill unveiled a broader sonic pallette that seems designed for festivals. An undoubted highlight. Wearing a checked shirt and sporting short hair, singer Caleb Followill was typically mute between songs, but at one point feebly encouraged the audience to sing along to ‘Milk’ saying: “I need you guys to sing along with me, thank you very much.”

Greeting songs such as ‘Fans’ (n/a) and ‘Knocked Up’ with relatively minor cheers, it was the more upbeat selection that the crowd ate up including ‘Charmer’ and ‘The Bucket’.
